RESTORING WATERY GULLY

On Sunday 27th May 2007 we held a Working Bee in Wattle Glen jointly with Friends of Watery Gully planting some 345 native trees, bushes and grasses. This is part of work to restore Watery Gully as a clean stream embanked by native plants of the original type and diversity and to encourage the return of native birds and fauna into this natural habitat. Nillumbik Shire Council supplied the plants.

For more pictures of the tree planting day click below.

This followed our first joint effort with Friends of Watery Gully when we organised a Lions Zone Environment Project on Sunday 28th May 2006, in response to Past District Governor Helen`s emphasis on the Environment in her Theme for 2005-2006. Friends of Watery Gully, together with Wattle Glen Primary School children, had recently planted trees in front of the scout pavilion on Kangaroo Ground Road. Our task was to do some clean-up work and place mulch (about 15 cubic metres!!) around these trees to ensure their survival. Nillumbik Shire Council and Melbourne Water supplied the mulch. Lions Club representatives were from the Lions Clubs of Diamond Valley, Ivanhoe and Bendigo-Strathfieldsaye. For this project our Club received the District Governor`s Patch for Best Environment Project in District 201V1 in 2005-2006.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR GREATER COMMUNITY BENEFIT

The Lions Club of Diamond Valley has a proud partnership with `Sweet by Nature` to donate their wonderful cakes and slices to many of the organisations which we support including the Mirabel Foundation, the Deafblind Association, Domestic Violence Refuges, Diamond Valley Special Developmental School, and Kalparrin Early Intervention Centre.

Thank you `Sweet by Nature` and congratulations on your success and growth with a product range now encompassing 80 odd lines all with the same ideal, of homestyle cooking on a commercial level.

`We still crack fresh eggs daily and use unsalted butter, whole cream and fresh fruits, resisting the modernisation into machine made products.`

MORE THAN 36 YEARS OF SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY

The Lions Club of Diamond Valley was formed more than 30 years ago, receiving our Charter on 27th April 1973 and celebrated our THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY at The Abbey, Diamond Creek on Saturday 24th May 2003.

Right from the inaugural meeting the overriding goal of the Club has been community service; in this we have achieved far more collectively than we could ever have achieved as individuals.

It was this thought also that set us to sponsor the Lions Club of Eltham and the Lions Club of Kinglake so those communities could have the benefit of their own Lions Club. In turn the members of the Lions Club of Diamond Valley sincerely thank our sponsor, the Lions Club of Templestowe for their foresight in extending Lionism to the Diamond Valley.

We are also proud of our contributions to the wider Lions movement having provided a number of District officers including two District Governors and hosted two District Conventions.

To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation.

The Lions Club of Diamond Valley Inc is now a proud member of District 201V5.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY RADIO

The Lions Club of Diamond Valley is a proud sponsor of Plenty Valley Community Radio.

In 2008-2009 the Lions Club of Diamond Valley made community donations and in-kind contributions to the value of more than $120,000, in addition to nearly 1,200 hours of volunteer service.

SAUSAGES (AND OTHER APPROACHES TO RAISING FUNDS) FOR SERVICE

In June 2007, the Lions Biggest BBQ Weekend gave Lions Clubs across the country the opportunity to support the Children`s Cancer Institute Australia in its research into the causes and prevention of, and to find a cure for, childhood cancer because Lions believe that every child deserves the chance to grow up. The Lions Club of Diamond Valley participated, raising $500 by conducting a Sausage Sizzle at Greensborough Market. This will be added to the $400 we raised last year and the $2 million already raised for this Appeal by Australia`s Lions. For photos of the 2006 BBQ click here.

Our sausage sizzles are famous across the Diamond Valley. If you see us at venues in the area please buy one of our snags. They are yummy - but more importantly the income helps us to continue our service projects in our community.

Our ability to provide community service is facilitated by our fund-raising and the generous support of the members of our community. In 2006-2007, fund-raising activities included:

Our Annual Swimathon, held in favour of the Mirabel Foundation, and organised jointly with Yarra Plenty Swimming Club and Yarra Swim School, which raised $5,171 cash from participants swimming laps and $1,500 in cash and kind from corporate sponsors,

$4,554 raised jointly with Lions Club of Greensborough at our Annual Bowls Day in Diamond Creek organised and run in aid of Kalparrin Early Intervention Centre and Diamond Valley Special Developmental School,

Our annual Twilight Market in Diamond Creek which raised more than $2,000,

A donation received of $1,650 from Diamond Creek Blue Light to be used to sponsor children to Licola,

Our Food Van and White Elephant stall at Diamond Creek Rotary Town Fair which raised more than $1,500,

Sausage Sizzles at Greensborough Market which raised more than $1,600, and

Sales of Christmas Cakes and Lion Mints which raised in excess of $1,000.

DIAMOND VALLEY LIONS COMMIT TO SAVE SIGHT

By the time you finish reading this paragraph one child somewhere in the world will have gone blind. One goes blind every minute. Half-a-million will have lost their sight by the end of the year. Childhood blindness is only one part of the global vision crisis. If nothing is done, experts say that the world`s blind population could double from 37 million to 74 million by 2020.

But Lions will not allow nothing to be done. True to their commitment to be knights of the blind, Lions have launched Campaign SightFirst II to prevent this tragedy by raising at least US$150 million to continue and expand the extraordinary work of SightFirst, Lions worldwide program to combat preventable blindness. Diamond Valley Lions have committed to contribute strongly to this effort.

Since 1990, Lions have prevented severe vision loss or restored sight to 27 million people: more than the combined populations of New York and Tokyo. SightFirst`s strategy of containing and eliminating the leading causes of blindness, creating sustainable eye-health systems, and training eye-care workers who will serve their communities for years to come, makes it extraordinarily effective and remarkably efficient. On average, just US$6 can save one person from a life of darkness.

SightFirst has touched the lives of tens of millions around the globe. Through SightFirst, Lions are changing the world - and the world now looks to Lions as leaders in the international effort to combat preventable blindness. Diamond Valley Lions are happy to accept tax-deductible donations towards this effort. Contact Graham Mulroney on 0419 549 706.
